Jeremy “Lil’ Heathen” Stephens gets biggest win of career

LAS VEGAS – According to Jeremy Stephens, he was throwing everything at Renan Barao with bad intentions. Barao was able to survive, Stephens said, because he’s a ‘true champion.’

The two met in the co-main event of Sunday’s UFC Fight Night 88, which took place at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on the same channel and UFC Fight Pass.

It wasn’t all that easy for Stephens. Former bantamweight champion Barao (following the loss, Barao is now 33-4 MMA, 9-2 UFC) opened the fight looking crisp in his first UFC bout at featherweight.

It was in the moments between rounds one and two where Stephens’ corner reminded their fighter to follow his plan of constantly coming forward.

Scores were 29-28 in Stephens’ favor, from all three judges. “I feel amazing,” he said, afterwards.”I’m not surprised at all,” he continued.

“Dana White promised me something tonight, so I came here to took it, and that’s exactly what I did…Hats off to him, he’s a great champion, he will be back. I just don’t think he should be here at 145 pounds messing with me.”
